Chi Hui Youth Club took part in the 11th 3E International Conference on Active Ageing, Joyful Living and Learning. Across two days of talks, forums and workshops, the team learned from scholars and educators from different regions and reflected on how play can connect joy, participation and exploration in education.

We are grateful to the Tzu Chi team for organising the conference and to educators and scholars from Malaysia, Taiwan, Japan, China, India and Singapore for sharing years of teaching and practical experience. Their ideas and methods gave new meaning to the goal of helping students learn joyfully while teachers guide with confidence.

Rediscovering the Purpose of Learning Through Play

Chi Hui Youth Club has always used play to support children’s learning. The conference deepened our understanding of activity design and brought us back to the essential questions: Are children willing to participate? Do they experience joy? Can they build their own answers through exploration?

1Experience the Joy of Play FirstBefore designing an activity, ask: Would I enjoy this game too? An educator’s own engagement and joy can naturally reach the children.
2Simple Materials Can Inspire LearningEngaging games do not require complicated tools. Everyday objects can become meaningful learning materials with creativity and thoughtful design.
3Guide Exploration Through StoriesStory-based situations encourage children to make, think and imagine, helping them create their own answers and learn actively.

Intergenerational Learning in Everyday Life

The conference’s intergenerational learning approach expanded our view of education. Learning can cross age groups, classrooms and fixed materials, allowing older adults’ life experience, young people’s energy and children’s curiosity to enrich one another.

We also thank the Muar Tzu Chi education team for an in-depth exchange on helping children rebuild focus, cooperation and enthusiasm for learning amid today’s distractions and challenges. More than twenty years of practical education experience gave our team valuable insight.

Innovation does not mean making games more complicated. The heart of play remains joy, participation and exploration.

The experience also showed us where we can improve. We are grateful to everyone who made this learning opportunity possible and helped us return to children with a wider perspective and renewed commitment to education through play.

Bringing Learning into Every Moment of Support

We look forward to continuing to learn with education partners and turning these ideas into warm, thoughtful programmes that encourage children to explore actively.
